I’ll Bet……………..

Your kid didn’t do this today!

Yes, it’s real.  Gage and his friends discovered this snake behind a shed and, guess what?  My son decided to capture the snake and carry it around his neck like a trophy, with all of his friends tagging along behind him, begging for a chance to touch it.

He and his friends came over and knocked on the door and I could tell something exciting was happening based on all of the noises I heard in the hall.  The door opened, and I heard Gage saying, “Mom, you’re gonna wanna see this.  It’s gonna be worth it.”  And, there he was, standing in the hall of our apartment building, holding a snake.

Later, Gage described to me in great detail, with sound effects and everything, how he captured the snake.  He even used an accent like the Crocodile Hunter and said, “Now this is one amazing creature!” This kid never ceases to amaze me.

Any tips from veteran parents on how to bridle some of his passion?  I mean, hello?!  I’d like for my child to have a little reservation when it comes to picking up snakes!  We just talked to him a few weeks ago about the importance of NOT picking up snakes.  We told him that we don’t want him picking up snakes unless he has had extensive training in how to differentiate poisonous from non-poisonous.

You wanna know how he justified his decision?  A few days ago, he sat with the laptop, looking at pictures of snakes in our area on the MO Dept. of Conservation’s website.  He thought that gave him the “extensive training” we had mentioned.

There are some pretty simple clues that cover all of the native snakes for safe identification. Just quiz him and make sure he has it right! Be grateful your kid is daring and inquisitive. Sounds like the makings of an entrepreneur!

I love it! He is so cute. I think its better he is so daring and y’all can just train him accordingly, rather than him being scared to do anything and y’all having to force him into things… you like that y’all, huh?

No way! I don’t know if I’m terrified or impressed . . . but I love the face he’s making in that picture.

I think he needs a pet . . . SNAKE!:) Maybe that would balance out the need to pick up wild ones?

I needed a good laugh today and I am so glad I came to your blog to get it! I am still smiling as I write this! You may want to check parenting advice out from my mom on this one evidently all three of her kids brought home snakes often. I only remember bringing home one and I left him in an aquarium and he dried out and died :( Love ya, Andrea
